After
our visit to Valladolid we continue to the Cenote X’Canche were we can
participate in different Eco-touristic activities such as rappelling into the
cenote, bike riding, zip line, and swimming.
The cenote X'Canche is found amid the Maya jungle. It carries the surname of an important Maya family who claims to have named it during the Caste War. The story is narrated by the nohoch mac (ancient Maya) Teodocio Kauil Cohuo. To date, the Canché family, who lived in the town of Hunukú (One God) gave the name of X-Canché to the cenote, a name representative of great significance among the Maya.
The
Maya of yesteryears and modern day Maya need the underground rivers of the
peninsula for their livelihood. The
dzonot, or cenote, is formed when the roof of a limestone cavity collapses,
revealing the water table and becoming magnet for all kinds of trees and
animals. The cenotes, besides serving as a water source, are revered place,
like caves, since it is the Mayas’ belief they are the entrance to the
underworld. In these natural spaces they conducted and are still performing
various ceremonies and offerings.
